Nehemiah 11

The Volunteers are Blessed

Key Verse = 2  “And the people commended everyone who volunteered to resettle in Jerusalem.”

1-2        The leaders lived in Jerusalem

3-9        Many descendants of Judah & Benjamin lived in Jerusalem

10-24    Many Priests, Levites, & Gatekeepers lived in Jerusalem

25-36    Farming settlements

There was something special about those who volunteered to live within the city of Jerusalem.  It reminds me of how we feel about our military.  We respect and honor those who have chosen to serve and protect our nation.  In a similar way, these Jerusalem servants made the personal sacrifice to serve and protect God’s House and His people.  Of course, the other citizens were important as well.  The surrounding cities provided needed crops and livestock.  But the servants within Jerusalem deserved great honor.

The Apostle Paul made this request to the Thessalonian church:

“And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.” [1Thes 5:12-13]

Let us pray for and support those who have given their lives to serve the church.
